5FF: Real Life Geeks That Inspire Me

I’ve probably mentioned most of these ladies in previous posts, because each one has inspired me in various ways. As a female geek who grew up in a time when it still wasn’t cool to be a geek (fortunately this trend seems to be changing and being a geek these days seems at least a little more socially acceptable), I am so thankful that I have had such amazing women that have inspired me in my teens, early twenties, and now even into my late twenties. So here is to the real life geeks who inspire me!

Real Life Geeks - Meg Cabot

Meg Cabot

If you are surprised that Meg Cabot has made this list then let me start by saying, “Welcome to The Tipsy Verse”. I have made no secret of my love for the Princess Diaries author and what she has meant to me since I was a young teen. In fact, you can read more about my admiration for Meg Cabot here, here, and here. You can also read the admiration that some of my fellow Tipsies have for Meg Cabot here and here. The best part is that not only is Meg Cabot an inspiration, she is also a Geek Girl herself. She frequently makes geeky references in her novels and geeks out over pop culture on her blog. She is also a bonafide cat lady!

Real Life Geeks - Shanna Swendson

Shanna Swendson

My discovery of Shanna Swendson was a case of “judging a book by it’s cover” gone right. My friend Lara and I went to Barnes and Noble in Tyler, TX several times over the course of a few months in 2006 and each time we came across a copy of Enchanted Inc.  Lara would say, “This book just looks like something you would like” and finally I bought a copy. Lara was right. I immediately fell in love with the world Shanna had created, then I found out that not only is Shanna a Texan, and a fellow UT grad, but she is a Geekette as well. I frequently visit her LiveJournal to see what manner of geekiness she has going on in her life. Here is a women who has made a name for herself as writer, knows how to geek out like the best of us, and graduated from my university alma mater, how could she not inspire me?

Real Life Geeks - Felicia Day

Felicia Day

Is it possible to have a list of real life geeks who inspire you without including Felicia Day? I certainly don’t think so. She is basically the Queen of Geeks, but more than that she is a woman who has paved the way for other geek girls to succeed in a really tough industry. I think the quote above really tells you everything that you need to know about why Felicia Day is one of my real life geek inspirations. She doesn’t let what others think get in her way. If she wants something done she gets it done! Her blog is also one that I really enjoy reading.

Real Life Geeks - Mayim Bialik

Mayim Bialik

Mayim Bialik always does things on her own terms. She defies Hollywood conventions and doesn’t even bat an eye when people question why she does so. And, while she is an actress, she is also a neuroscientist! How bad ass is that?!?! Mayim Bialik is beautiful, talented, intelligent, and uncompromisingly unique – she should be an inspiration to all girls.

Real Life Geeks - JK Rowling

JK Rowling

J.K. Rowling is an inspiration for many reasons. The story of how she went from being a single mother on government aid to one of the most influential authors in the last twenty years is enough to land her on my list of real life geeks that inspire me, but that is not the only or most important reason. The main reason that J.K. Rowling is on my list is because she inspired me as a child to not be afraid of my imagination. She taught, not only me but an entire generation that we all have a little bit of magic in us and that the most powerful magic we have besides love is the ability to believe in ourselves.
