Movie Review: Gifted
Movies like Gifted are why Michelle and I cannot have nice things. Specifically tear-free evenings at the movies. Sure, we knew we were going to get a dose of Chris Evans being “emotional AF,” but we did not anticipate the great need for tissues. Thus, we sobbed into the sleeves of our cardigans as we watched this beautiful story unfold.
Frank Adler (Chris Evans) is a single man raising a child prodigy – his spirited young niece Mary (Mckenna Grace) – in a coastal town in Florida. Frank’s plans for a normal school life for Mary are foiled when the seven-year-old’s mathematical abilities come to the attention of Frank’s formidable mother Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan) whose plans for her granddaughter threaten to separate Frank and Mary. Octavia Spencer plays Roberta, Frank and Mary’s landlady and best friend. Jenny Slate is Mary’s teacher, Bonnie, a young woman whose concern for her student develops into a connection with her uncle as well. – Fox Searchlight
Reason to See:
There isn’t a bad performance in this whole film. Seriously. The entire cast is phenomenal. Also, it’s an incredibly touching story about the importance of family, the dangers of ego, and the awesome ways kids can change our lives.
Reason to Skip:
I literally can’t think of one. Sorry, not sorry.
Is Gifted Worth Spending The Price of a Ticket?
