Movie Review: Free Fire

Free Fire is the perfect movie to kick-off the Summer blockbuster season. It is action packed, slightly ridiculous and funny as hell. It is also fun to watch a movie that is more than making a statement about the absurd use of gun violence in modern media and entertainment. Don’t get me wrong, the statement doesn’t spoil the insane, entertaining ride that is Free Fire.

Set in a colorful yet gritty 1970s Boston, Free Fire opens with Justine, a mysterious American businesswoman, and her wise-cracking associate Ord  arranging a black-market weapons deal in a deserted warehouse between IRA arms buyer Chris and shifty South African gun runner Vernon. What starts as a polite if uneasy exchange soon goes south when tensions escalate and shots are fired, quickly leading to a full-on Battle Royale where it’s every man (and woman) for themselves. via A24

When I first saw the premise of Free Fire I thought, ‘there is no way they are going to pull off a movie with such a limited cast in one location’. I was, in fact, proven wrong. This isn’t the best film and it isn’t without flaws, but it is set up perfectly to become a cult classic. I also went in concerned that there was only on female character, but, y’all, even with a relatively small part, Brie Larson owns this movie. Between her stellar performance and the performances of her co-stars, you never question that Justine is a bad-ass.

Honestly, I really recommend checking out Free Fire. Again, not the best movie ever made, but definitely a great summer block-buster. It’s smart, well-written and exciting. Also, who doesn’t love a film that tongue and cheek makes fun of our stupid gun obsession.

Reason to See:

The sheer fact that they were able to shoot a film in the same location with a small cast and tell a complete story that is exciting and interesting is reason enough to see it.

Reason to Skip:

Lots of violence and language. You know if those aren’t your thing and if they aren’t, then skip it.

Is Free Fire Worth Spending The Price of a Ticket?

I think so.

Tipsy Recommendation:

A strong, stiff drink. Perhaps more than one.
