Alien Covenant Proves the Alien Ship Has Sailed

For the sake of full transparency, I’ve only see Alien and Aliens, and I saw them many years ago so my memory is a bit fuzzy. I still haven’t seen Prometheus and it wasn’t until about half way through Alien Covenant that I even knew it was an Alien prequel. Now that you have these vital pieces of information we can move forward.

Alien Covenant

Alien Covenant is a hot mess. I don’t know any other way to put it. The film opens with a philosophical discussion about creation in a scene that is very Ex Machina and ends by effectively ruining everything that made Alien so great. I know, bold statements. Keeping in mind that I have no idea what happened in Prometheus, I was watching this film as a fan of Alien. A fan of the film that made space exploration seem like the most exciting and terrifying thing ever. This film, is laden with philosophical debate and lackluster action.

In a nod to the original film, the crew of Covenant wakes up early due to an unforeseen event. The excitement around this event is the peak of the film, from here it is down hill. Everything is about couples, the implications of veering off a pre-determined course (which may have some religious undertones) and evolution. I don’t know, it’s just a mess.

ALIEN COVENANT

There are few entertaining moments throughout the film, but for the most part we never stick with any one thought or storyline long enough to become fully invested. It’s like the filmmakers had a philosophy they wanted to explore but someone reminded them that they were making a horror alien film. The plot is all over the place and the action is an after thought. My friend, Tom, was also quick to point out the shortcomings of the CGI. Honestly, I was too distracted trying to weave together a cohesive plot that I didn’t even notice the CGI, but his sentiment has been repeated by others.

I’ve been mulling this film over for a few days now and all I can think is that it never should have been made in the first place. Alien didn’t need a prequel, it barely warranted a sequel. At this point, they have drained the Alien tap dry and I hope they just leave it alone after this.
